1156 learners participate in the ‘OUTSTE(A)M in Action’ MOOC

“The OUTSTE(A)M approach helped me see how science, art, engineering, maths, and outdoor learning can blend naturally”

In January and February 2026 the OUTSTE(A)M project hosted “OUTSTE(A)M in Action: Let’s STE(A)M” Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). 1156 participants from 51 countries participated in the four-module tutored course, which included three live events.

The OUTSTE(A)M project (2024-2026), which is supported by an EU Erasmus+ grant, is addressing the lack of attention to STEM learning in ECEC and primary education. Aspects being highlighted in the project’s activities and publications are: high quality integrated STEM education, STEM and outdoor learning and equal access to STEM education and careers.

The MOOC was coordinated by European Schoolnet® (EUN) and delivered through the EUN Academy platform with the support of Scientix®. Most of the participants were primary school teachers (31%) or pre-primary/ECEC educators (19%) or secondary school teachers (29%). During the MOOC they learned about the integrated STEM approach;  explored the OUTSTE(A)M Toolkit and Guidelines; developed skills in promoting  inclusive, sustainable and age-appropriate technology practices and designed STE(A)M activities outdoors and indoors.

Ninety-five percent of the 1156 participants reported that because of the MOOC they were now more confident incorporating an integrated STEM approach in their teaching. 739 successfully completed the course and were awarded a certificate. This involved developing their own OUTSTE(A)M learning scenario and reviewing Learning Scenarios of others.  Highlighted in the very positive evaluation of the course by the participants was the focus on bringing STEM outdoors.
